چکیده

Although the effects of corruption on bilateral trade are well-documented, its impact composition trading partners remains unexplored. In this paper, we argue that in a country imposes asymmetric costs depending their characteristics. Consequently, as level changes, flows from some change more than others, characteristics, changing partners. We focus two characteristics partners: (1) and (2) membership Organization for Economic Cooperation Development Convention Combating Bribery Foreign Public Officials International Business Transactions (OECD Convention). Using gravity model, find evidence negative assortative matching international with respect to corruption. is negatively associated high-corrupt countries positively volume signatories OECD convention. Our results suggest future studies topic should consider controlling institutional dissimilarities between it has implications costs.

Is Corruption Detrimental to International Trade?

Many regard corruption to be detrimental to international trade. Some, however, think that corruption greases commerce in case of low-quality institutions. Others argue that arbitrary corruption is more damaging to trade than predictable corruption. This is the first paper to test these hypotheses empirically with trade-related measures of corruption. It finds that in general, corruption is det...

Assortative Matching and Reputation

Consider Becker’s (1973) classic matching model, with unobserved fixed types and stochastic publicly observed output. If types are complementary, then matching is assortative in the known Bayesian posteriors (the ‘reputations’). We discover a robust failure of Becker’s result in the simplest dynamic two type version of this world. Assortative matching is generally neither efficient nor an equil...

Assortative Matching and Search

In Becker’s (1973) neoclassical marriage market model, matching is positively assortative if types are complements: i.e. match output f(x, y) is supermodular in x and y. We reprise this famous result assuming timeintensive partner search and transferable output. We prove existence of a search equilibrium with a continuum of types, and then characterize matching. After showing that Becker’s cond...

Marriage and Assortative Matching in Rural Ethiopia

This paper examines the determinants of human and physical capital at marriage. Using detailed data from rural Ethiopia, we Þnd ample evidence of assortative matching at marriage. Assets brought to marriage are distributed in a highly unequal manner. Sorting operates at a variety of levels — wealth, schooling, and work experience — that cannot be summarized into a single additive index. For Þrs...
